The Climate Crisis and Health: What We Know and How We Can Make a Change

Arianne Teherani PhDis a Professor of Medicine and an Education Scientist in the Center for Faculty Educators. She is Director for Program Evaluation and Education Continuous Quality Improvement for theArianne Teherani, PhDUCSF School of Medicine and is the Founding Co-Director of the University of California Center for Climate, Health, and Equity. Dr. Teherani’s research which has informed local and global conversations, research agendas and policies, advances knowledge in the areas of equity and justice, professionalism, and climate change and health education. Her research on equity addresses educational practices which perpetuate educational disparities and examines interventions aimed at creating equity and inclusion during medical education. She has also led studies aimed at identification and remediation of unprofessional behaviors and the role of clinical education in shaping the professional identity of learners and teachers. Her research has also focused on education as a core solution to the climate change and health crisis. She has identified the vital role of education that occurs in the local context and through community-engaged medical education to learning and sustainable thinking. Her research has been featured in venues such as National Public Radio, Market Watch, and the Huffington Post. Dr. Teherani launched and leads the UCSF Equity and Justice in Education Works in Progress series. She teaches and mentors students in the UCSF-University of Utrecht doctoral program in Health Professions Education, Master’s Program at the UCSF-University of California, Berkeley, and UCSF Education Sciences Inquiry domain.

Sheri Weiser, MD, MPH, MA, is a Professor of Medicine and internist at the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital at UCSF. Her researchSheri Weiser, MD focuses on the impact of food insecurity and other social and structural factors on treatment outcomes for HIV and other chronic diseases both domestically and internationally. She also studies how extreme weather events affect food security and downstream health outcomes and evaluates sustainable food insecurity and livelihood interventions as a way to improve health. She has published over 175 manuscripts on these topics, and has been the principal investigator on over 25 research grants in the area, including 9 NIH grants. In addition to the above, Dr. Weiser co-founded and will be co-directing the new University of California (UC) Center on Climate Change and Health where she aims to expand climate and health research, education and clinical initiatives.  She is a member of the Global Climate Leadership Council to advise the president of the UC system on issues related to climate change and sustainability, and has trained faculty members across UC Health Science schools to integrate climate and health into their ongoing teaching.
