Dr. Sylvia Portugal: Survival strategies of malaria parasites in the dry season
Dr Silvia Portugal is a Group Leader at the Centre for Infectious Diseases, Parasitology Unit, Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany.
Dr. Dan Fletcher: Mobile phone based diagnostics for infectious diseases
Dr. Dan Fletcher is a Professor of Bioengineering and Biophysics at UC Berkeley and the Pernendu Chatterjee Chair of Engineering Biological Systems. He is also a Chan-Zuckerberg Biohub Investigator and currently serves as Director of the Blum Center for Developing Economies at UC Berkeley. Dr. Fletcher and his laboratory develop biophysical techniques to study fundamental mechanisms of cellular organization, with applications to infectious diseases, immunology, and cancer biology. His global health work has focused on the development and implementation of mobile diagnostic technologies.
Dr. Ayesha Mahmud: The impact of current and future climates on spatiotemporal dynamics of influenza in a tropical setting
Ayesha Mahmud is a demographer at UC Berkeley, who is broadly interested in the interplay between human population changes, environmental factors, and infectious disease dynamics. Her research draws on theory and methods from demography and disease ecology, to answer questions such as - why do outbreaks occur at certain times of the year? How and why does the mortality burden of infectious diseases vary over time? How do population travel patterns drive the spatial dynamics of outbreaks?
Dr. Flaminia Catteruccia - Blood, Drugs and Parasites: Novel ways to block Plasmodium transmission by mosquitoes
Flaminia Catteruccia is Professor in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and an Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. Her research focuses on the study of the molecular basis of reproductive biology in Anopheles mosquitoes, the malaria vectors, and of the factors that shape the development of the malaria parasite during mosquito stages. Her research program integrates basic molecular biology investigations with high-impact translational studies.
